To me this video is interesting because it shows a marked contrast between how Christianity initially spread slowly and organically through free association and how Islam initially spread rapidly in one solid block through conquest and compulsion.

High Calling Blog Tour – An Introduction
The High Calling
I was recently invited to participate in a beta preview of a new faith based website called The High Calling. The site is designed to help followers of Jesus Christ bridge the gap between their religion and their work.
Marcus Goodyear was kind enough to send me an invitation. He also asked if I’d be willing to review the site and I am glad to do it, especially when you figure Mark is already an active blogger over at Good Word Editing.
So over the next few days I’ll be writing about the site here. I thought about just doing one long review of the site. But I think it will be better to break it up in smaller chunks. So let’s get started.
Filling a Need
There is definitely a huge need for some serious help in connecting faith with work. There are far too many Christians who lead ineffective lives because they so thoroughly compartmentalize their lives away not realizing that all facets of our lives are interconnected.
As a quick example, my current primary employment is in the maritime industry. As a result I spend a lot of time down on the docks. And since I’m at the mercy of the ships, my schedule is far from 9-5.
Yesterday was Sunday and I had to go out to a ship in the morning. If things went well, the plan was to take care of my business then head out to church. Before I went up to the ship I needed to attend, I stopped by one of the offices to gather some paperwork.
On my way out of the building I ran across another guy I know who is a client of ours. The way he was dressed got my attention. He usually has wears jeans and a polo shirt, which is sort of the unofficial uniform of the management types at the ports. It’s what I usually wear too.
But yesterday this guy had on dress clothes and a tie. Because it was Sunday morning I’m guessing he had a similar plan to mine, only his church doesn’t have as casual a dress code as the one I go to.
What took me back is that I would have never pegged this guy as a church-goer. Often you can tell. Unfortunately too often it is because the person is obnoxious about their religion.
But I’ve had it happen before. There are several rough types I work with and around on the docks that spend most Sunday mornings sitting in a pew somewhere. Then they come back and are exactly the same in the workplace as everyone else. The only way you’d know is if you happened to notice they were dressed differently when they stopped by the office on a Sunday morning.
It made me wonder how I’m perceived out there.
And it is confirmation to me that we need a site like The High Calling.
(I never made it to church yesterday myself, by the way. There were complications when I got to the ship. The Captain was yelling at a government official. Fortunately for all concerned the Captain noticed the guy from Homeland Security had a gun and backed down. But it slowed everything down for me and I missed church. Some days are like that.)
Like I said, over the next few days I’ll be talking specifics about the site and mention both things I like about it, and things they might consider doing even better. If the idea getting better at connecting your faith with your daily work appeals to you, you might consider going ahead and sign up to become a member of TheHighCalling.org .

Got the Library Set Up!
Whoo-Hoooo!
It has been a long and somewhat painful process but the SucessCREEations Library is finally set up and ready to be filled with books.
Check out today’s post over there to see why I feel so strongly about reading being an important tool to achieve success.
That whole library thingy has taken up all my free time (of which I don’t have much) and a good chunk of my sleep time (which rarely seems enough) over the last few days to get the way I wanted it to be. I still have some tweaking to do. And of course I’ll have to add books to it.
But a recommended reading list is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I just feel that it fits in better over there than it would here.
I should be back to my usual posting hi-jinx here at CREEations shortly. There sure is a lot to juggle with life, isn’t there?
In the mean time, keep a careful eye on Ernesto. He’s not much of a storm, probably won’t ever graduate to full hurricane (himmicane?) status. But he’s just enough to stir things up a little in my line of work. And his screwy course prediction has to be giving the professional weather guessers fits!
Anyway here’s to hoping your day is a wonderful experience.
I’m off to work. I hear my ship may have come in…
Enjoy!

Did You Know Blog Day is Almost Here?
I was poking around yesterday and I stumbled on the Blog Day web site.
Did you know there is a day set aside world wide for blogging and bloggers? Did you know that that day is almost here?
What’s it all about, you ask? Well here is what the web site has to say about it.
BlogDay was initiated with the belief that bloggers should have one day which will be dedicated to know other bloggers, from other countries or areas of interests. In that day Bloggers will recommend about them to their Blog visitors.
What will happen in BlogDay
In one long moment In August 31st, bloggers from all over the world will post a recommendation of 5 new Blogs, Preferably, Blogs different from their own culture, point of view and attitude. On this day, blog surfers will find themselves leaping and discovering new, unknown Blogs, celebrating the discovery of new people and new bloggers.
It sounds like a lofty goal, maybe even a little pie in the sky optimistic.
It also sounds like my kind of fun. I’m in. Thursday I’ll share 5 new blogs with you and give y’all an opportunity to discover something new.

Wanna Know a Secret?
Psssst! Wanna know a secret?
Lean close, let me whisper in your ear.
I’ve started a new blog.
Unlike here where I look at what I call practical life philosophy, over there we will be focusing in on the topic of success, specifically what it takes to improve our lives for more successful financial, physical, relational and spiritual health.
It is very much a work in progress, which I explain over there. When I get it a little more polished up I’ll have a grand launch (complete with cake!)
But in the mean time you can get an inside view as I start putting things in place. Sort of a behind the scenes access pass, if you like.
Anyway go check it out at SuccessCREEations.com and let me know what you think.
Enjoy!

Excellent New Travel Blog
Anyone interested in a really cool idea of a travel blog should go check out Where is Basil?
The premise is silly – a fictitious donkey named Basil (accompanied by a Fawlty Towers DVD set – Read the explanation page for more.) is visiting different people who have signed up on The List. When Basil is visiting that person, they write about what he sees in their fair city.
They even have a cool map of all the places that he is visiting. In addition to a whole bunch of places here in the states, list includes places like
- Arncliffe, Australia
- River John, Nova Scotia, Canada
- Minsk, Belarus
- Cape Town, South Africa
- Bellingen, Belgium
Right now Basil is with Gorgeous and I in Savannah. So if you’d like to learn a few tidbits about Savannah from someone living here, check it out! I’m even throwing in lots of photos from around town!

25 Peeps – Exercise in Silly Vanity or Marketing Genius?
Well my little experience with 25 Peeps has come to an inglorious end. At the end of the day I lasted a little over 24 hours up there. Not bad really when you consider most of the folks are trading skin exposure for clickage.
And then when you add in the inconvenient fact that my host server went off line for about three hours right at the start of Monday morning, one of my peak traffic times… Ah, well.
From my perspective was it worth it?
Well there was definitely some entertainment value for me as I checked throughout the period to see if I was still hanging in there.
But what about traffic?
The main way the site entices us to sign up is by holding out the carrot of a potential river of traffic as folks click on your photo to check out your site. In my case it was a wash. I referred to their site almost exactly as many people as clicked on my photo to come to my site. Which seems to me to mean that I had a lame photo which didn’t stir up much interest.
But it also means that I gave them some traffic (not much mind you) that they may not have otherwise had. The net traffic flow definitely went in their direction.
Now I don’t begrudge them getting some traffic from me. It’s not like they stole it or anything.
I figure it is pretty smart marketing on their part to play to our own personal vanity. I say good on them. They seem to have a pretty good little business going there. But I probably won’t re-submit even though they sent me the email encouraging me to try again with a more enticing photo. Right.
It was fun. But no thanks.
Unless maybe…
Of course if I were smart, I’d listen to these words of wisdom
Everything is so weary and tiresome! No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content.
History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.
